Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Treatment

Custom-made oral appliances keep the airway open during sleep, reducing snoring and helping to manage obstructive sleep apnoea.

Treatment

Overview

With age the soft palate and the uvula widen and begin to sag; weight, alcohol and smoking all make it worse. Where clenching is part of the picture too, the chewing muscles grow, the airway narrows and snoring appears during sleep.

What does snoring lead to?

Poor sleep quality brings daytime tiredness, difficulty concentrating and anxiety, and over the long term it can lead to depression. Feeling unsettled during the day increases sugar and carbohydrate intake, which lays the ground for weight gain and, with it, high blood pressure and diabetes. Accidents at home and at work can follow from poor concentration. Over time apnoea may join the picture, and the resulting problem with oxygenation is life-threatening.

How is snoring treated?

Any nasal obstruction has to be dealt with first. A slack, sagging soft palate and uvula can be corrected surgically. Where clenching has enlarged the chewing muscles, the clenching is treated with a biological toxin and the muscles return to their normal size. Alongside all of this, a snoring appliance can be used.

How is a snoring appliance made?

The appliance is made by dentists trained and experienced in this work. Impressions are taken of both jaws; a bite registration is then taken with the lower jaw positioned forward. Trays made individually for each jaw are fixed to one another at that bite angle and given to the patient. This is why the ready-made snoring appliances sold over the counter do not work.

What a snoring appliance does

  • It holds the lower jaw forward and stops it slipping back during sleep.
  • It keeps the airway open all night and stops the tissues collapsing against the back of the throat.
  • It increases the activity of the slackened muscles.
  • Those who use one notice the difference the very next day.
  • As long as the position and alignment of the teeth do not change, the same appliance can go on being used.
