The Dental Implant Process

A dental implant is an artificial titanium root placed into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. It restores both chewing function and appearance.

Oral Surgery

Overview

Dental implants let a single gap be filled without cutting down the neighbouring teeth; where all teeth are missing, implants can support dentures that hold far better and are more comfortable to wear.

Implant treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, like a filling, a root canal or an extraction, so you feel no pain during the procedure. The porcelain work or removable denture that sits on the implants is completed over a few impression appointments, to your satisfaction and your dentist's.

How long does treatment take?

That depends on where the implant is placed, on the structure of the bone, and on whether supporting surgery is needed. If the bone is suitable, the prosthetic teeth can be finished the same day; where more work is required, the treatment and healing period can run to nine months.

What determines the quality of the treatment?

Placing an implant and building the prosthetic work on top of it is a complex treatment. The condition of the bone and the position of the implant in the mouth must be assessed by prosthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons using advanced imaging and technique.

Implant quality is judged on technology, surface characteristics and design, and the standing of the manufacturer matters here too. Our clinic works with Straumann Group implants, among the largest in the dental industry, chosen for their success rates and their international guarantee.

Once treatment is complete, thorough oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups determine how healthily and how long the implant serves you.

Why implants are worth it

  • Better chewing and a better aesthetic result.
  • A single missing tooth can be replaced without cutting down its neighbours.
  • The surrounding tissue stays healthier than it does under a bridge or a fixed prosthesis.
  • For patients who have lost all their teeth, they solve the retention problem of removable dentures and make fixed work possible.
  • With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, they can last a lifetime.
