Metal and Ceramic (Clear) Brackets
Fixed braces are available with classic metal brackets or tooth-coloured ceramic brackets that blend in with your natural smile.
Overview
In fixed orthodontic treatment the brackets are bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth. Alongside metal brackets there are ceramic (clear) brackets, made as a more discreet alternative, and they are fitted to the front surfaces in exactly the same way.
Orthodontic treatment with ceramic brackets
Ceramic brackets are usually white and far less noticeable than metal ones. The well-made ceramic brackets that have appeared in recent years make for a treatment you can be comfortable with aesthetically.
They are widely believed to lengthen treatment, but as long as the patient does not break a bracket loose, we cannot say they extend it to any meaningful degree.
Looking after your mouth during bracket treatment
The most important responsibility of a patient in metal or ceramic braces is to carry a toothbrush. We recommend two brushes as a rule: an orthodontic brush and an interdental brush. Brackets on the front surfaces call for a careful brushing technique.
Picture the front of a tooth divided into three: brush the area above the bracket towards the gum first, then the bracket itself, then the area below it. Next, work between every bracket one by one with the interdental brush your orthodontist has chosen for you; finally, clean between the teeth with the special floss known as Superfloss.
Why patients choose ceramic brackets
- Their white colour makes them far less noticeable than metal brackets.
- They make for a treatment you can be comfortable with aesthetically.
- As long as no bracket comes loose, they do not meaningfully lengthen treatment.
- Ceramic brackets developed in recent years do not discolour; only the clear elastics holding the wire may pick up some colour from strongly coloured food and drink.
