Dental Bonding (Closing Gaps)
Bonding reshapes teeth and closes gaps between them with composite resin in a single visit, without removing healthy tooth structure.
Overview
If gaps between your teeth (diastema) or small irregularities in their shape are spoiling your smile, bonding gets you an attractive result with almost no tooth substance removed.
How bonding works
Adhesive systems rest on bonding agents that grip both the tooth and the filling material micromechanically. These agents deliver maximum adhesion with minimal abrasion and preparation of the tooth surface, and applying them demands technical precision.
The agents are monomers made up of hydrophilic chains that bond to the tooth and hydrophobic chains that bond to the filling material. They fill the microscopic spaces opened up by the phosphoric acid applied to the tooth surface, forming a sealed, strong bond between tooth and filling.
How is it done?
Once the bonding surface is prepared, restorative material in the most saturated shade — chosen after assessing the colour of your tooth — is applied to the missing parts or the areas to be built up. What matters most about the technique is that it works with almost no loss of tooth substance, painlessly and, but for rare cases, without sensitivity.
Why patients choose bonding
- Carried out with almost no loss of tooth substance.
- Painless, and it causes sensitivity only in rare cases.
- Maximum adhesion with minimal abrasion.
- Suitable for irregularities of shape and size, including closing a diastema.
- Lasts five to ten years, provided you do not bite hard objects and look after it well.
