Lingual Orthodontics (Invisible Braces)
In lingual orthodontics the brackets are bonded to the inner surface of the teeth, so the treatment stays completely hidden from view.
Overview
In lingual orthodontics the brackets sit on the inside surfaces of your teeth, so only you and your orthodontist know they are there. For adults in particular it is treatment that leaves social life untouched and the smile free.
What makes lingual brackets different?
The brackets used in lingual orthodontics are made individually. Because they are manufactured to the shape of your own teeth from the impression your dentist takes, and the wires are bent robotically, the outcome can be determined and shown to you in advance.
What is getting used to them like?
After the brackets are first bonded, your tongue needs seven to ten days to adjust when speaking. Beyond that, the discomfort the brackets cause fades within about a week, as with any other option. Because the brackets are on the inside, you can also follow the change in your teeth far more clearly as treatment goes on.
Why patients choose lingual braces
- They are discreet: throughout treatment, only you and your orthodontist know there are brackets in your mouth.
- Whitening, bonding or veneers on the front teeth can be carried out while treatment is under way.
- Because an attractive smile is there from the very start, it keeps your motivation up.
- The cleansing action of tongue and saliva makes decay far less likely than with conventional braces; white spot lesions are almost never seen.
- Adults can carry on with social life as usual, and it works well for children too.
