Oral Diagnosis

Oral Diagnosis (First Examination)

Your first appointment: a detailed examination and radiographs that map your oral health and shape a personalised treatment plan.

Oral Diagnosis

Overview

Sound treatment begins with a sound diagnosis. At the first appointment — oral diagnosis — the whole mouth is examined on preventive dentistry principles and the findings are confirmed with radiographs; whatever treatment is needed is then planned around that assessment.

What is preventive dentistry?

Preventive dentistry aims to protect a patient's oral health as fully as possible while intervening as little as possible in natural tissue. Early diagnosis, appropriate treatment and preventive measures all serve that end. In practice it means calling patients in for a check-up twice a year, carrying out any treatment that is needed, and teaching them how to look after their mouth.

What should your dentist know about you?

General medical conditions, medication you take regularly and any allergies can change the drugs and the approach your dentist uses. Always tell them about these. If you are prone to allergies, for instance, you may need a test before anaesthetic; if you take aspirin as a blood thinner, you may need to stop it before surgery, in consultation with your dentist.

If you have come for more attractive teeth, say clearly what result you are hoping for; that makes it much easier for your dentist to tell you how achievable your expectations are.

What regular check-ups give you

  • Early diagnosis catches problems before they grow.
  • Oral health is protected as fully as possible with the least intervention in natural tissue.
  • Preventive work such as fissure sealants costs less than treating decay once it has taken hold.
  • Oral hygiene instruction establishes the right daily habits.
