Zirconium Crowns
Metal-free zirconium crowns transmit light like natural enamel, offering both high strength and a highly aesthetic result.
Overview
For anyone after both strength and a natural look, zirconium stands out among crown materials. It is so durable that it can be used comfortably and safely at the back of the mouth and in long bridges, and it is one of the crown materials that gives a tooth the most natural appearance.
How zirconium crowns are made
Zirconium crowns are produced in the laboratory with CAD/CAM technology, from an impression taken of your own mouth and teeth. Porcelain is layered onto a zirconium framework made in a shade matched to your tooth, and the fit is refined at the chair. Treatment is usually completed comfortably in two or three appointments.
How do they differ from metal-backed porcelain?
Porcelain is brittle, so a supporting framework goes underneath it. In metal-backed porcelain that framework is a dark grey chrome-nickel alloy; in zirconium it is a white material. Light passes through far better as a result, and the edge of the crown or bridge that meets the gum shows no grey shadow. Zirconium crowns are also healthier, stronger and better looking.
Why patients choose zirconium
- Light passes through it as it does through a natural tooth, for a far better aesthetic result.
- A light material, resistant to heat and impact, that conducts neither heat nor electricity.
- It causes no change in taste, no gum problems and no bad breath.
- Plaque does not gather on the smooth porcelain surface; coffee, tea and cigarettes do not affect it and the shade stays as it was fitted.
- Its strength makes it safe to use at the back of the mouth and in long bridges.
